Well-to-do Alsatian art dealer and Roman Catholic who profits from Jews selling art to flee. He becomes entangled in a mistaken identity case when a Jewish Robert Klein's mail is forwarded to him. He investigates his namesake while police suspect him, ultimately failing to prove his ancestry in time and being deported to Auschwitz.
Klein reports the mail mix-up but faces official suspicion of hiding his own Jewish identity.
