A merchant seaman who arrives at the isolated farm seeking his deceased grandfather. He stays to help with chores, quickly becoming entangled in the complex dynamic between Jill and Ellen. He pursues Ellen romantically, proposes marriage, kills the fox, and ultimately returns to the farm. His confrontation with Jill over a falling tree leads to her death, after which he leaves with Ellen to start a new life.
