Norwegian publisher employee who meets Simone at the Frankfurt Book Fair and falls deeply in love. He travels to Paris to pursue the relationship but faces her emotional withdrawal due to her severe depression and nightmares of black birds. He returns to Norway, repeatedly tries to contact her by phone, and ultimately learns of her suicide a year later, returning to Frankfurt in a futile attempt to find her again.
