Protagonist. A mild-mannered gentile personnel manager in WWII Brooklyn who initially harbors anti-Jewish prejudices. After experiencing firsthand discrimination and demotion from wearing glasses, he apologizes to Gertrude, marries her, and ultimately confronts the antisemitic sentiment in his neighborhood.
