The captain of the Ingo, he is a patriotic German with humanistic values that clash with Nazi ideology. Initially monitored by Kruse, he gradually trusts Crain. After learning of his son's involvement in sinking an Allied hospital ship, he drunkenly reveals his anti-Nazi stance, is declared unfit by Kruse, and ultimately cooperates with Crain to radio for Allied rescue.
