Baron's son, psychologically scarred and cowardly from the First Schleswig War. Becomes an alcoholic and a cruel officer. During the final battle, he freezes in terror and tries to surrender, leaving his men to die. He later returns home, assumes the barony, and forces Inge into marriage.
