Depressed janitor and protagonist who becomes the legal guardian of his teenage nephew Patrick after his brother Joe's death. Haunted by a past mistake that killed his own children in a house fire, he struggles with severe guilt and depression. Initially reluctant to stay in Manchester, he eventually reconnects with Patrick, arranges for his friend George to adopt the boy so he can take a job in Boston, and accepts he cannot overcome his trauma to remain in the town.
