A former sergeant-major who owns a hire car business and helps run a boys' club. He drives the newly discharged Lady Franklin to Bath, becoming her sole confidant and developing unrequited love for her. As his business fails and his mental state deteriorates, he becomes enraged by Lady Franklin's engagement to Cantrip, ultimately losing control and driving his Rolls-Royce recklessly at his garage.
