The protagonist, an enslaved man who kills his overseer in retaliation for his son's whipping and escapes north. Pursued by bounty hunter Luke McCabe, he survives various encounters, aids abolitionist Levi Coffin, and eventually joins John Brown's raid at Harpers Ferry. After the raid's failure and being wounded, he escapes capture by leaping into a river. His legacy is later chronicled by his son.
