A commanding military officer visiting the island to honor his late wife. Initially dismissive of local superstitions, he becomes increasingly paranoid and authoritarian. He destroys the escape boat, threatens Thea, and demands immediate burials. Ultimately succumbs to the plague and is killed by Mrs. St. Aubyn while attempting to murder Thea.
