Protagonist and successful oil-field firefighter who lives under an assumed name after fleeing a chain gang. Blackmailed by Ramey, he is betrayed and returned to prison, but later escapes to seek revenge. He arrives at his former plant during a major oil fire, overpowers Ramey, forces a confession, and successfully extinguishes the blaze to reclaim his life.
