A famous author who recognizes the literary superiority of Emily's Wuthering Heights over Charlotte's commercially successful Jane Eyre. He meets Charlotte in London, introduces her to high society, and is persuaded by her to visit the impoverished East End, where she learns of Arthur Nicholls's current life.
