One of the squadron's top aces who initially despises Major Brand for sending inexperienced pilots into combat. He and Scott disobey orders to attack a German airdrome. After Brand's recall, Courtney becomes CO and experiences the crushing burden of command. He forbids Scott from a dangerous mission, gets him drunk, and flies the patrol himself. He successfully shoots down the German ace von Richter but is subsequently killed by another enemy pilot.
