A stoic and embittered seaman and smuggler aboard the schooner Southern Cross. Initially cynical and emotionally detached, he survives a deadly Pacific typhoon. After a misunderstanding regarding Rose's actions, he briefly regains his cynicism but ultimately undergoes profound personal transformation, recognizing human goodness and faith after Rose sacrifices herself to save him from the mutinous Toomey.
