The protagonist who opens the film asking passersby for money. He flirts with a young woman, proposes, and gives her a ring. After a reporter approaches her, a slapstick fight ensues. The Swindler later steals the reporter's camera containing a photo of a car accident, runs to a newspaper office to claim the story, evades police, and engages in another street fight before being swept away by a streetcar.
