A runaway slave who joins Huck on a raft journey to Illinois to gain his freedom. He is falsely accused of murder, sold to the Phelps farm, and held in captivity. He ultimately escapes with Huck and Tom's help, risks his own liberty to save an injured Tom, and learns he was already freed by the Widow Douglas, finally attaining his long-sought liberty.
