Son of the Carleton con artist family. Initially engaged to the wealthy Adela Jennings. Later takes a job as a mail clerk to be near Leslie Saunders, who is attracted to him despite his frank admission of his flawed character. He pursues engineering studies, finds value in honest work, and eventually marries Leslie.
