Protagonist. A former German soldier wrongfully sentenced to death by Schramm in 1945 for buying chocolate on the black market. He escapes execution and lives as a street peddler. Fifteen years later, he obtains Schramm's old death warrant, deliberately gets arrested again to force a trial, and ultimately exposes Schramm before choosing to start a new life with Lissy.
