The young heir raised by his wealthy cousin Ambrose. After Ambrose's death, he travels to Florence and returns to Cornwall deeply suspicious of Rachel, believing she murdered her husband. He inherits the estate, gives it to Rachel, becomes romantically involved with her, and later falls into feverish delirium. His paranoia leads him to withhold a safety warning, resulting in her fatal accident and a lifetime of guilt.
