A highly successful New York City gangster with a superstition regarding apples sold by street peddler Apple Annie. He falls for Elizabeth Queenie Martin and invests in her nightclub career to pay off her father's debts. He manipulates underworld politics, temporarily halting a lucrative deal with Chicago boss Steve Darcey to fund a lavish charade for Annie's long-lost daughter, Louise. Ultimately, he chooses love over organized crime.
