Iverstown's district attorney and Martha's husband. He secretly loved Martha since childhood and covered up her 1928 murder. Driven by jealousy and fear of blackmail, he attempts to eliminate Sam and accidentally falls down the stairs. In the climax, he shoots Martha and himself.
