James Deakins is a Kentucky trapper who befriends Boone Caudill and joins Zeb Calloway's expedition up the Missouri River. After being shot and rescued, he investigates the rival Missouri Company, identifies Streak's bullet as the cause of his wound, and helps kill him. He develops a romantic interest in Teal Eye but respects her decision, ultimately maintaining his friendship with Boone.
