He wanders into an Appalachian forest, is rescued and cared for by Callie, and struggles with inner turmoil between his religious past and his attraction to her. Haunted by hallucinations of his parents urging him to kill Callie, he attacks them with a chisel and barbed wire. He is ultimately shot by Jude before succumbing to his injuries.
