The protagonist and harp player for Inouye's unit. After surrendering, he attempts to convince hold-out Japanese soldiers to lay down arms but is beaten and left for dead during a bombardment. Surviving with a monk's help, he disguises himself, travels to bury dead comrades, and ultimately decides to remain in Burma as a monk dedicated to mourning and peace.
