A conservative obituary writer turned newspaper columnist who initially presents himself as a commitment-phobic womanizer. He gradually develops genuine feelings for his liberal rival Lorie, struggles to verbally express love, and causes their breakup during a heated on-air argument over a coffee mug, before finally reconciling by publicly reversing his stance on a highway merger metaphor to win her back.
