Older brother and primary protagonist. Son of an Imperial Japanese Navy captain, he survives the Kobe bombing with his sister. He conceals their mother's death, moves to a bomb shelter after tensions with his aunt, steals food, fails to save his sister from malnutrition, and dies of starvation at a train station. His spirit reunites with Setsuko at the end.
