A charismatic gambler and grifter who wins the right to use a deceased soldier's draft status to avoid the army. He persuades war relief officials to fund a charity casino, falls for socialite Dorothy Bryant, and experiences a moral awakening after reading a letter from a dead man's mother. He ultimately sacrifices himself by returning the casino's proceeds to war relief, kills his treacherous partner, and departs on a supply ship bound for Europe.
