Central figure. An abused and delinquent man from Texas who moves to Chicago. In 1966, he breaks into a nurse dormitory, experiences a psychotic break, and murders eight student nurses. He evades capture, attempts suicide, is hospitalized, identified by a physician and the sole survivor, sentenced to life imprisonment, and dies in prison in 1991.
