Alias for Artur Ludvik, a loyal WWII communist hero and former vice-minister of Foreign Affairs. Arrested and imprisoned without cause, he endures brutal brainwashing and sleep deprivation to force a false confession of treason. After a staged public trial, he is sentenced to life imprisonment, later rehabilitated, and eventually writes memoirs amid the Prague Spring.
