A psychology professor and firm rationalist who lectures on superstition at an English university. He forces his wife to burn her magical charms, after which he faces a series of misfortunes and psychological attacks. Initially resistant to the supernatural, he eventually embraces her practices to save her life and escapes the campus with her, having abandoned his skepticism.
