The central protagonist and first indigenous bishop of Indonesia. His story spans 1940–1949, covering the end of Dutch rule, Japanese occupation, the proclamation of independence, and the National Revolution. He documents these events in his diary, works to alleviate civilian suffering during wartime, and engages in local, national, and international politics. Later recognized as a National Hero by President Sukarno.
