An ambitious son of a poor teacher who inherits a tobacco factory through marriage. He rapidly accumulates wealth but grows morally corrupt, exploiting Irina for business deals. He contracts malaria and dies in Greece while pursuing a major transaction with German and Greek merchants during the end of WWII.
