A skilled miner who encounters the Mistress of the Copper Mountain. After suffering under the bailiff, he marries Nastya and raises a family. Haunted by visions of the Mistress, he periodically visits her in the mine. After shooting himself in the chest, he survives but permanently severs his communication with her.
