Canadian mechanic and helmsman of the steamboat African Queen. Initially tolerates the missionaries, but joins Rose Sayer’s plan to convert their boat into a torpedo vessel to sink a German gunboat. He pilots the boat through treacherous rapids, repairs critical damage, and survives capture and a death sentence after the German captain marries them before the enemy ship is destroyed by their torpedoes.
