Protagonist and fisherman-farmer in Connemara. Takes in Patsy, confronts the landlord over rent hikes, and discovers Patsy's massacre. Fatally stabbed by Patsy but survives. Loses his wife and son to famine, raises orphan Kitty, and ultimately kills the British agent and Patsy to save her.
