A Royal Marines officer on sick leave who meets Diana Fraser, impulsively proposes, and marries her. Deployed to North Africa, he returns to find Diana presumed dead, subsequently marrying American Red Cross nurse Joan and having a son. After a backstage confrontation with Diana and a theatre bombing, he is wounded, reconciles with the dying Diana, and is legally permitted to remarry Joan.
