Protagonist and central figure. A prisoner on remand subjected to severe physical beatings and psychological trauma. He initially submits but gradually develops a subversive coping mechanism, feigning madness to reclaim his sanity. He refuses to play the dehumanizing prison game, organizes inmates to communicate through walls with a Unity in adversity chant, and ultimately walks out defiantly to face trial while maintaining his voice and mental independence.
Berriman represents the failing authority while Dale becomes his ultimate adversary through mental resistance.
