The protagonist, son of wealthy merchant Ignat Gordeyev. Raised by his godfather Yakov Mayakin, he struggles to find his place in society. After inheriting a vast fortune, he engages in a futile rebellion against his social class. Declared legally incompetent, his reckless behavior leads to his downfall, ending as a vagrant.
