An experienced non-party worker assigned to machine the first Soviet hydraulic turbine. Initially hindered by alcoholism which causes defects, he quits drinking, overcomes a warped lathe bed issue, organizes veteran masters, and ultimately leads the successful completion of the turbine, celebrated as a new Communist.
