American war correspondent who travels to the Philippines to research and write about Col. Hannegan's guerrilla campaign. Sutton quickly discovers Hannegan's brutal, prisoner-less tactics and feels revulsion. He volunteers to join Hannegan's unit, witnesses the defense of a native hospital, and survives the colonel's death. Ultimately, Sutton chooses to conceal Hannegan's darker methods and publish him as a celebrated war hero.
