A Polish communist and active party member pursued by police in 1936. After being arrested and imprisoned based on a suspected betrayal by Stefan, he escapes following Germany's invasion in September 1939. He seeks Stefan's help again but becomes increasingly suspicious and convinced of Stefan's treachery when Stefan avoids workplace arrests and his girlfriend Ewa is taken by the Gestapo.
