A handsome, shrewd nomadic outlaw and trickster who becomes the object of Mari's desire. He teams up with her to exploit the hydrocephalus child for profit, deserts her after the child dies, but later returns to consummate an affair with her. His actions directly trigger the tragic events and Mari's downfall.
