Central protagonist and sculptor. After his parents separate, he moves to Paris and marries Clarice, who leaves him for another man. Following his father's death, he returns to New York feeling rejected by his family. Struggling and contemplating suicide, he finds inspiration through artist model Hope Martin. He creates his breakthrough sculpture, Blind Youth, achieving sudden fame, and ultimately marries Hope after Clarice reveals their union was invalid.
