The young protagonist growing up in Ottawa. He develops a crush on his new housemaid Mignonette, gets into trouble at school over a drawing, is punished by the principal, confesses to Mignonette about stealing her kisses, reconciles with schoolmate Peggy, and experiences his voice breaking.
