A German Army officer Franz meets at a military hospital during WWI. Günther instills a rigid sense of duty and nationalist ideology in the young Franz, promising him a place in his regiment. He later rescues the severely wounded Franz on the battlefield and promotes him to non-commissioned officer after he is the sole survivor of a hopeless engagement.
