Emilia's frail and ailing mother who returns to Poland with her daughter. She depends entirely on Emilia for care and emotional support. Upon learning of the possibility of emigrating to the United States, she realizes she cannot survive the journey and passes away, indirectly shaping Emilia's ultimate decision to stay.
