The protagonist, a talented Brooklyn boxer who secretly joins his neighbor Mary's Double Dutch team as a replacement. As a jumper, he rapidly improves his rope skills while his boxing declines. After a conflict over his divided loyalties and public humiliation by a rival, he ultimately chooses his passion for jump rope over his father's expectations. He wins the city finals with his team, reconciles with his father, and ends up in a lasting relationship with Mary.
