Canadian ex-POW living in England, left unstable and violent. Kills a publican in a fight and hides with Jane. Wins a horse bet, assaults a man and a policeman on a train, and serves a prison sentence. After release, he is blackmailed by Carter into stealing penicillin. He kills Carter and initially plans to flee with Jane but ultimately chooses to stay in England.
