The ambitious founder of the Chicago department store Bazaar. After his wife Abigail dies following the birth of their fourth child, he raises his three sons and one daughter, expanding the store for each. He refuses his devoted manager Abe Ullman a business share, instead giving each child a tenth share. On his deathbed, he issues a six-month ultimatum for his children to prove their worth, otherwise leaving the majority stake to Abe.
