Protagonist who moves to the woods with Penny to film a nature documentary. After his backpack is stolen, he discovers the reclusive artist Mr. Jones. He researches Jones in New York, sneaks into his cabin to steal a candle-eyed doll, and later experiences psychological terror and time distortion. Ultimately, he returns the doll, dons Jones' mask, and assumes the role of guardian between the dream and waking worlds.
